Maurer, who earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Brown University in 1962, served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Peru before he began working as a newspaper reporter. He got his start in photography taking pictures to accompany his stories. Later, he earned a master's degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. He received a Fulbright-Hays Grant to photograph in Peru in 1975, then accepted a teaching position at University of Texas at San Antonio.
