Hemba People, Congo/Zaire: Male Figure of a Drummer. Carved wood figure with a dark, smooth patina. On the head is a stylized feather headdress, and the open mouth (with protruding tongue) gives the appearance of singing. A slit-drum is suspended on the figure's torso, supported by braided straps. The figure's neck is adorned with rings, and the muscular arms are marked with bands of jewelry. Each hand bears a mallet, striking the drum, and the knees are bent in a dance pose. Mid 20th century.
